A Typical Day at SFE
Every day at SFE begins with a fun movement activity, readying the mind and body for learning.
This is followed by a class circle to plan the day’s events, set goals, and join in community building activities. The rest of the morning is dedicated to humanities and mathematics with a snack and recess break. These core academic subjects will be related to and supportive of the students’ projects, giving the students important tools for their independent work. Art, music, role playing, and theater are incorporated into the academic work and afternoon projects. The students participate in physical education with a PE specialist every day, followed by project time twice a week. One day focuses on group projects and the second day on individual projects. These projects are facilitated by outside specialists who work hand in hand with the teacher to add depth to the project and help the students develop a more nuanced view of their work. Twice a week a science and a music specialist come in the afternoon and work with the class. Science is relevant to the academic and project work and music, when appropriate. Once a week students spend the entire day on an exciting outdoor excursion. These days immerse the students in a variety of outdoor skills as well as teach team skills. |
